The city of Alpine was established in 1882 and is the seat of Brewster County. It is centrally located between the Davis and Glass Mountains and near Big Bend National Park. Alpine is a designated Texas Main Street City and is home of Sul Ross State University. Climate and location make the town a popular vacation area. Fort Davis National Historic Site
Fort Davis National Historic Site is n. of town near Limpia Creek off SRs 17 and 118. Occupying 474 acres, this frontier military post was established to protect travelers, freighters and mail riders on the San Antonio-El Paso Road. In summer, interpreters in period dress staff the officers' quarters, barracks, kitchen and servants' quarters. Kokernot Field and Park

Located 18 miles south of Alpine on Texas 118. Here you will find this source of famed Texas agates.
