This city was established in 1894 and is the seat of the Matagorda County. Today Bay City is a commercial center for farming, ranching, oil and nuclear energy. It is port on Colorado River Reeder Channel connecting with the Intracoastal Canal. Recreation on the river includes boating, skiing, fishing and a 28-space RV park.

Matagorda County Birding Nature Center
This nature center spans 34-acres on the Colorado River. Bird and butterfly watchers love this facility, which includes an observation platform, nature trails, bridges and a wetlands area and pavilion. It also features six beautiful gardens.
Matagorda County Museum
See the collection of early Texas clothing, books, maps, furniture and paintings. Century-old carpentry tool collection, late 17th Century music and archives can also be found here. Children's Museum features exhibits and activities for kids. On the bank of the Colorado River sits Riverside Park, which is adjacent to the Rio Salado Golf Course, which features a jogging trail with a 10-station exercise course along the way, boat ramp, day pavilion and fishing.
