This city grew from a small sawmill and store settlement that was founded in 1824. In 1822 Nathaniel Lynch set up the Lynchburg Ferry and then in 1864 a Confederate shipyard was built at nearby Goose Creek both establishments added to the city's significance. Oil was discovered in 1916 and since then industries have grown to include petrochemicals and synthetic rubber as well.

Baytown Historical Museum
Artifacts can be found pertaining to local and pioneer history. Located at 220 W. Defee Street. Open Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 2pm.

Baytown Nature Preserve
Following the devastating hurricane Alicia in 1983, Baytown entered into an agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The agreement resulted in the acquisition of 400 acres of land for the establishment of a park. This quiet oasis, located on the western edge of town, is home to hundreds of birds and other animals year-round. It is also on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, which extends from the Texas-Louisiana border to Brownsville.

Bicentennial Park
This Park features an outdoor theatre and hosts the annual July 4th celebration and other outdoor concerts. Located at Lee Drive and Market Streets.

Evergreen Point Golf Course

Fred Hartman Bridge
This bridge, spanning the Houston Ship Channel, boasts double diamond-shaped towers that stand as tall as a 45-story building. The bridge's main span is 2,475 feet, the length of eight football fields. Just to the south of the bridge on Texas 146 is Bayland Park Marina. There is also a multi-ramp boat launch and dock with rest rooms for boaters to enjoy fishing and other water activities.

Goose Creek Stream Greenbelt
Much of Baytown's growth occurred along the shores of Goose Creek Stream. Much of the stream's shoreline is preserved for a greenbelt park. Visitors can find a birding overlook, pavilion, bike and pedestrian trails, canoe launches, park and a playground.

Gray Sports Complex
This complex includes a lighted ball field, lighted tennis courts, nature trails, picnic area and playground. Located at 5200 East Road.

Houston Raceway Park
This is a 440-acre drag-racing complex with races. Located at 565 South. Open Wednesday and Saturday nights (December - March, Wednesday & Sunday.) Call 281-383-2666 for more information.

Lynchburg Ferry
This ferry shuttles travelers across the mouth of the San Jacinto River and has been in operation since 1822. Located West of the city.

Republic of Texas Plaza
This plaza was dedicated during the sesquicentennial and features a statue of Ashbel Smith, one of city's early settlers and leader for the advancement of education in Texas. Historical marker in city identifies Smith's home "Evergreen" overlooking Tabbs Bay. Located at 5200 East Road.

San Jacinto Museum of History and Monument
Here you can experience the world's tallest memorial column and witness revolution in the Jesse H. Jones Theatre for Texas Studies. Study our nation's past among the museum's exhibits and find the best Texana books and gifts at the gift shop. Also includes the Battleship Texas—once the most powerful weapon in the world—also enjoy the nature trail, biking or visit one of the state's most interesting birding environments. Wallisville Heritage Park
Enjoy displays and artifacts of the Spanish Mission Nuestra Seora de la Luz and Presidio San Augustan de Ahumada, 1756 - 1771. Includes vintage saddle-making tools and hardware from the area's history. Adjacent you will find a restored 1869 school that contains a genealogical/historical library. Located 13 miles east on I-10 at Trinity River, Exit 807. Open Monday - Saturday 8am - 5pm.
