This city, whose name derived from the huge natural spring nearby, was settled in 1849. Today, the same spring sits in the center of City Park. The city is also the seat of Howard County.

Big Spring State Park
Named for the only watering place for bison, antelopes and wild horses within a 60-mile radius, the park is atop a 200-foot mesa at the south city limits. Highlights of the 382-acre park include a prairie dog town, jogging and nature trails, a playground, picnic sites and a panorama from a 3-mile scenic drive around the mountain. Hangar 25 Air Museum
Hangar 25 Air Museum, 1911 Apron Dr., houses aircraft exhibits and displays describing the World War II-era bombardier school once located in this restored hangar on a former airbase. Visitors can see a training simulator, the nose of a B-52 bomber, a model airplane collection and such aircraft as a 1949 North American T-28A Trojan and a Cessna T-37B Tweety Bird as well as items from the Korean conflict and Vietnam War. Heritage Museum
