This city is the seat of Washington County, which is home to more than 120 historic sites and markers many from the Texas Revolution. The Texas Declaration of Independence was drafted and signed in Washington County and there is a state park located on the spot where it was signed. The city is also the home of Binn College, Texas' first county-owned junior college, founded in 1883.
