Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Billed as "The Grand Canyon of Texas", the nations second largest canyon was named "Palo Duro" (meaning hardwood) by Spanish explorers for the abundance oof mesquite and juniper trees. Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened in 1934, as a Civilian Conservation Corp project. The park consists of 26,275 acres of the scenic, northern most portion of the Palo Duro Canyon. The canyon itself is 120 miles long and up to 20 miles wide with a depth up to 800 feet. Camping, picnicking, horseback, hiking and bike trails, an interpretive center and gift shop are some of the amenities. Located 11450 Park Road 5, 12 miles east of Canyon. Call 806-488-2227.

Panhandle Plains Historical Museum
Opened in 1933, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum (PPHM) has grown to become Texas's largest history museum. More than thee million artifacts, from Comanche Chief Quanah Parker's eagle feather headdress, saddles, automobiles, to collections of historic art of New Mexico and Texas are displayed. Open daily. Located at 2503 4th Avenue in Canyon. Call 806-651-2244.

Texas Musical Drama in Palo Duro Canyon
The most spectacular outdoor musical drama is "TEXAS" - the official play of the state of Texas. The venue for this family-friendly show is the Pioneer Amphitheatre at Palo Duro Canyon. Amidst fireworks and grand scenery, the long-running play tells the story of the lives of the pioneer settlers in the Texas panhandle in the 1880s. Enjoy a steak dinner before the show or arrange for a behind-the-scenes look at how the show is produced. Runs June - August. The ticket office is located at 1514 5th Avenue in Canyon.
