This city was founded in 1876 on Hords Creek, which sits on an area of rolling, grassy plains and wide bottom lands. This is a typical frontier settlement where the first store was hardly completed before a cemetery was laid out for the loser in a gunfight. Today this city is the seat of Coleman County. The area is still devoted to the business of ranching and receives additional income from oil, natural gas, limestone and high-grade glass sand from the Santa Anna Mountain, which is eight miles to the southeast.
