This city, established in 1856 as Taylorsville, is the seat of Wise County. The famous Butterfield Overland Mail Route passed through the town in the mid-1800s. Also is the site of the trial and hanging of five Peace Party conspiritors in 1862.

Lake Bridgeport
Located off US Highway 380 on the West Fork Trinity River.
Wise County Courthouse
This courthouse was built in 1895 of pink limestone from Burnet, it has been pronounced a perfect architectural example of its type and era. Located on the traditional town square.
Wise County Heritage Museum
This museum is housed in the administration building of the old Decatur Baptist College built in 1892. Exhibits include Indian artifacts, old post office fixtures from Chico community, art and mementos of early area history Open Monday & Tuesday 9am - 3 pm; Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9am - 4pm; Saturday & Sunday 1:30 - 5pm. Located at 1602 S. Trinity.
