This city was founded in 1892 by Simon West and was named for a private deer park in the area. The railroad station was established in 1892 and the post office in 1893. The city has grown from a population of just 100 in 1940 to 12,773 just three decades later.

Armand Bayou Nature Center
The Armand Bayou Nature Center provides environmental education and preserves the important and vanishing ecosystems with which it has been entrusted. The center is 2,500-acres of diverse ecosystem. Located near NASA and situated in the Bay Area in Pasadena. Call 281-474-2551 for more information.

Houston Lake
This 12,240 acre-lake is owned by the City of Houston. It is popular with the residents of the upper Texas coast. Fishing, water sports are popular here. It is located about 18 miles northeast of Houston.

San Jacinto Battleground State Historic ParkThis site, adjacent to the city
This site, adjacent to the city's northeast limits, is the site where Texas won independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836 and because of this is claimed to be the Birthplace of Texas. Includes the San Jacinto Monument and Battleship Texas, which is the sole survivor of the pre-World War I dreadnoughts. Battleship open daily 9am - 5pm and is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Located east of downtown Houston 22-miles via Texas 225 on Texas 134.

Sheldon Lake
This is a heaven for birders and anglers alike. Trails meander around 28 different ponds offering fishing opportunities and picnicking. Located in northeastern Harris County at Sheldon Lake State Park. Call 281-456-9350 for more information.

Sheldon Lake State Park and Enviromental Education Center
This is one of the last freshwater wetlands in the greater Houston Area, where natural conservation, recreation and education flourish. Call 281-456-9350 for more information.

Texas Rock Gym
Here visitors can learn how to rock climb on more than 6,000 square feet of simulated rock terrain. Climbing routes for all skill levels.
