The first U.S. settlement on the Rio Grande began during the Mexcan War with the establishement of Camp Eagle Pass. In 1849 the permanent Fort Duncan was founded. After the Cicil War the site became a burial plot for the confederacy. Today Eagle pass sites as an international gateway and tourist center as well as the seat of Maverick county.

Things to do in Eagle Pass

Fort Duncan
This fort was established in 1849 and was occupied by three companies of 1st U.S. Infantry Regiment. During Civil War. Then the post was occupied by Confederate troops of Frontier Regiment. Federal troops reoccupied post 1868 and it remained under military authority until 1916. Many of the restored stone buildings form the center of Municipal Park.

Fort Duncan Museum
This museum is housed at the Fort Duncan post headquarters building. It includes exhibits, artifacts and photographs from varying periods. Open Monday - Saturday 1 - 4pm. Call 830-773-1714 for more information.

Guerrero, Mexico
Just 28-miles south of Piedras Negras, on Mexico Highway 2, lies the Spanish Colonial Villa de Guerrero with the Mission San Bernardo ruin. It is claimed to be the most important Colonial ruin in Coahuila. The famed Camino Real crossed the Rio Grande into Texas from this point.

Piedras Negras, Mexico
Located within a comfortable walking distance from downtown Eagle Pass, across the Rio Grande, is the busy Mexican city of Piedras Negras. Handicraft items at bargain prices can be found in many shops and the traditional Mexican market. A nachos festival is held very October to celebrate the origin of the internationally savored nacho snack in this city.

San Juan Plaza
Visitors can take a pleasant stroll around the historic San Juan Plaza, which gives a relaxing view into the rich Mexican heritage that has made its way into the modern lifestyle of Eagle Pass. Even the breeze seems to whisper "bienvenidos"
