This city grew from a military camp that was established at the end of the Mexican War by General Winfield Scott. The base was named for General William Jenkins Worth who was a contributing factor to the winning of that war. The city became the seat of Tarrant County in 1860 and after the Civil War it became a major shipping and supply depot for cattlemen. Today Fort Worth is one of Texas' major cities and participates in a wide range of industries which include big names like Lochheed Martin, American Airlines and Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
