The name of this city was derived from the nearby old Fort Gates. It became the seat of Coryell County when the county organized together in 1854. There are many great city parks including Faunt Le Roy, which sits along the Leon River and offers picnicking and a fitness course.

Coryell County Courthouse
The courthouse was constructed in 1897 of hand-cut and carved limestone. It stands as one of the finest remaining examples of Romanesque Renaissance Revival architecture in Texas. The clock tower is copper-domed with elegant carved wood and polished stone.
Coryell Museum and Historical Center
At the Coryell Museum visitors can view antiquities from the area's churches, schools and pioneer families. Among other features there is also an unusual 1855 double-wall log fail that has an underground dungeon. Located at 718 Main Street. Open Tuesday - Saturday from 10am - 4pm.
