Gonzales is famous for hosting the first skirmish of Texas Revolution. The town was first settled in 1825 and named for Rafael Gonzales who was at the time, governor of joint state of "Coahuila-Texas". Gonzales was actually designed by the Mexican government and the town's streets were named for saints.

Things to do in Gonzales

Eggleston House
Tours are available of this restored log house, originally built in 1848. The house is furnished with some great period antiques. Free tours may be arranged through the museum curator or by contacting the chamber of commerce. Call 830-672-2157 for more information.

Gonzales Memorial Museum
This museum features the cannon that precipitated that first battle when Texans challenged Mexican troops to "Come and take it." Located at E. St. Lawrence St. in Gonzales TX. Call 830-672-6350 for more information.

Independence Park
Enjoy golf, tennis, picnicking, and a variety of other activities at this picturesque park on banks of Guadalupe River. Independence Park is located on U.S. 183 south in Gonzales TX.

Lake Wood
Lake Wood is a 488-acre reservoir located on the Guadalupe River west of Gonzales. The lake offers picnicking, boating and fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. Located five miles west of Gonzales on U.S. 90-A, then south on F.M. 2091.

Palmetto State Park
Palmetto State Park is best known for its wide variety of plant life. This impressive 178-acre park offers swimming, fishing, picnicking, nature study and hiking. Go ten miles north via U.S. 183 and F.M. 1586 to Park Road 11 near Gonzales TX.

Pioneer Village Living History Center
The Gonzales Pioneer Village features several structures built in the 19th century, including a working broom factory, cabins, smokehouse and 1870s Hamon church. Open Sept. - May Sat. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sun. 1 - 5 p.m.; June - Aug. Fri. - Sat. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sun. 1 - 5 p.m. Groups tours available Tues. - Sat. Inquire at chamber office.
