This city was established in 1846 and was once considered the "Cotton Capital of the World." Now the center of Hunt county, the city is still an agricultural center that features cotton. The rural area that surrounds the town was also the birtch place of Audie Murphy who was the nation's most decorated soldier of World War II.

Garden of Peace
At this garden visitors can view a 10-foot by 30-foot bas relief sculpture that depicts Peace in the World and five free-standing doves. The sculpture is entitled Peace in the Soul and was created by Santa Fe artists Kirk Tatom. Located in Forest Park Cemetery on US 69 South. Open during daylight hours.
Genealogy Room
Researchers from all across the country seek out the keys to their ancestry at the W. Walworth Harrison Public Library. The library features a superior genealogy collection with local history references that are geared to finding that elusive branch on the family tree. Visitors can receive expert help from the reference librarians and attend frequent workshops.
Greenville Railroad Museum
Ride back in time to the golden days of railroading at the East Texas Railroad Musuem. Housed in the historic "Katy" Depot that once served MKT passengers, the museum includes exhibits of railroad memorabilia from many aspects of railroad history. Heritage Garden of Hunt County
The Heritage Garden takes its inspiration from Victorian garden designs. The entrance steps are a legacy from the Victorian-era home that once stood on the garden site. Brick walkways were built from bricks salvaged from a downtown building.

Heritage House
Built in 1927 to serve as the home for the president of the University, the house has been restored to its original elegance. The two-story modified colonial style structure, with red brick veneer, is decorated with many furnishings and artifacts from former presidents' families. The adjoining Lyday Heritage Gardens were dedicated in 2001 and features antique roses and shaded teakwood benches. Located on the TAMU-C campus. Open Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm. This reserves features one hundred acres of virgin tall grass blackland prairie. It is an excellent spot for bird watchers, wildflower enthusiasts and anyone looking for an idea of how the north central Texas area looked to early settlers. To get there take US 380 west and then go north on FM 903.
The Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum
This dual-theme museum follows the life of local farmboy Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated soldiers of World War II, while also illustrating the history of the cotton industry in the region. Exhibits include Murphy's medals, uniforms and memorabilia; a working cotton patch; and information about other notable locals.
