Despite this city's frontier-sounding name, it has really only been around since the 1960s, when the Cedar Creek Reservoir was built. The population was only 60 as of 1970 when they voted on incorporation so that the town could sell beer. The city was named for Gun Barrel Lane, which has since become State Highway 198.
