Paris was founded in 1839 on the divide between the Red and Sulphur Rivers, and in 1844 became the seat of Lamar County. A.M. and Welma Aikin Archives
The archives display a replica of Senator Aikin's Austin office and mementos of his 46-year career, much of which was devoted to Texas education. Also of note are the historical archives for Delta, Fannin, Lamar, and Red River Counties. Located in the Mike Rheudasil Learning Center at the Paris Junior College. Bywaters
Built as a memorial to victims of the 1982 tornado, Bywaters is a park located in the historic district of Paris. The park boasts a beautiful 1931 Corinthian peristyle which mimics the unique style of a Grecian temple. It is a beautiful setting for the Paris Municipal Band's summer concerts, spring and summer weddings and Winter Wonderland. Located in the 300 block of South Main Street.
Cooper Lake State Park
Cooper Lake State Park is 3,026 acres and consists of two units, the Doctors Creek Unit and the South Sulphur Unit. The rolling hills of Cooper Lake State Park offer spectacular views of Cooper Lake, from the steeper hills of South Sulphur Unit to the more gradual slopes of the Doctor's Creek Unit. Popular activities in the park include camping, fishing, water skiing, picnicking, boating, unsupervised swimming, bird watching, nature study, and educational nature programs and tours. Culbertson Fountain
Culbertson Fountain is located in the historic district on the Plaza downtown. It was presented as a gift to culminate the rebuilding of Paris after the Fire of 1916. Restored as a Bicentennial project, this fountain reigns not only as the unique focal point for Paris and Lamar County, but as "the prettiest plaza in the State of Texas."
Eiffel Tower
This Eiffel Tower, standing 65 feet tall, represents a remarkable community effort. It was constructed by the Boiler Makers Local #902 utilizing materials, plant space, and employee time donated by the Babcock & Wilcox Company. The tower stands as the impetus for Paris being designated "1995 Best Pit Stop" by the Great North American Race. It was "Texanized" with a cowboy hat in 1998.
Evergreen Cemetary
Dating back to 1866, this large cemetery contains more than 40,000 graves including many early Texas patriots. You will find many unusually hand carved head stones ad monuments. Located at S. Church Street at Jefferson Road.
Hayden Museum of American Art
The Hayden Museum of American Art consists of four galleries, the largest of which houses a permanent collection of graphic art, archival photography, and American chairs. This collection includes examples from every art period and American master painters are generously represented. The pieces are arranged to chronologically present a complete history of the American art scene from Folk Art to Modern and Contemporary. Located at 930 Cardinal Lane. Lake Crook
The 920-acre Lake Crook is operated by city of Paris for recreation and water supply use. The lake is used year round for fishing, boating and water skiing. It features lighted picnic areas, fishing pier, boat ramp, and campsites. Anglers find excellent fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, catfish, and hybrid striped bass. The scenic lake is about 3 miles northwest of Paris off U.S. 271.
Pat Mayse Lake
This 5,993-acre Corps of Engineers impoundment can be found on Sanders Creek. The public park offers boat ramps, picnic and camping areas. Boating and fishing are very popular. Food, tackle and bait available nearby. Located about 13 miles north of Paris.
Plaza Gallery
The Plaza Gallery is located in a restored 1917 two-story shop on the west side of the downtown plaza. This museum is an extension of the William Elizabeth Hayden Museum of American Art. Sam Bell Maxey State Historic Structure
This gem of Victorian architecture was built by Confederate General Maxey in 1868. It was occupied by his family for almost a century. It has been restored and furnished as a state historic site.
